Unlike the picture above, I lay no claim to having a green thumb. However, I find gardening interesting. Particularly in its metaphoric sense. I came across a principle this weekend that is fascinating to me. It is something I have been mildly obsessed with for a while now.
Roots and fruits.
The branch, to produce anything, obviously has to stay connected to the vine/trunk. That is where it receives all the vitamins and nutrients it needs to produce healthy fruit. An unhealthy connection to the vine/trunk will produce sick fruit, or no fruit. Even a centimeter of separation, makes a massive impact.
Now, according to botany, the vine, or trunk, gets it’s nutrients from the roots. The roots receive from everything around it, and channel it into the vine/trunk, up to the branches, and manifest with leaves and fruit. Unhealthy roots, produce unhealthy fruits, if any.
There are some things that people say are problems that aren’t actually problems. They are symptoms/fruit/results of a problem. Bad apples aren’t a problem, an unhealthy tree is. Sin isn’t a problem it is the fruit of a problem. Illness isn’t anything but a result. Money is just a result, your weight and health, just a symptom, a result.
Trying to fix bad apples by fixing the bad apples, is like trying to treat emphysema with cough syrup. Trying to get people to stop sinning, by telling them to stop sinning, is like treating a rattlesnake bite with a Hello Kitty band-aid. There’s a bigger problem than that little hole in your leg, you need to get the poison out. You need antivenin, to counteract that poison.
Your bad habits often aren’t your problem, they are the result of the problem. If you want to lose weight, you don’t starve yourself. Becoming bulimic, or anorexic doesn’t solve anything, you just changed eating disorders. There are so many causes to being overweight that part of the problem with our society is that everyone has a one size fits all solution to “cure” you.
We must recognize areas where we have poor results, and really do some reflecting and soul searching. Perhaps even visit a professional who actually cares. Ask good questions and research their answers. Don’t just take whatever they tell you at face value. There is a lot of bad science out there. There is a lot of “quick fix” mentalities out there that aren’t solving anything. There are specialist doctors, that if they taught their patients proper nutrition, they would lose 90% of their patients (Dr.WilliamDavisMD)
If we notice that we never seem to have enough money, that is a symptom of a problem. That problem could be, you aren’t being a good steward of your money, or you need to earn more. Both are difficult and are not quick fixes. You may have to seek out someone who you know, knows what they’re doing, and ask for help. There are many people who wouldn’t mind helping you. Again though, do your own research. With the advent of the internet, information has never been more readily at hand.
Please, know that things can and will get better.
Its ok to be happy and healthy!

p.s. This is a principle, meaning it can be applied to more than the things I have mentioned. Take ownership of you life. Jesus gave this to you, be a good steward of it.
Brings to mind Matt. 3:10, you have to get to the root of the problem.
