The Hungering And Thirsting

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” Matt 5:6

“As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭42‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The promise of blessing, is in the hungering and thirsting, not in the filling.

Where does this come from? How can I get this appetite?

In a 1:1 study of myself, I have found, the more I read His Word, and spend time in fellowship with Him, the more I want to.

“O God, thou art My God; early will I seek thee: My soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee In a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; To see thy power and thy glory, So as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭63‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭KJV‬‬
David’s desire was born in the sanctuary. Not the sanctuary that we think of these days, what we call the auditorium in a church building. But this is actually talking about the holiness of God. Every other place, sanctuary is described in some variation of holy or holiness.

He was spending time IN the holiness of God, fellowship with God, with His character. Seeking after him, because nothing makes you more voracious for Gos then spending time with Him. Part of the definition of holiness is to be set apart. Setting that time aside, maybe even setting a place aside, to spend time fellowshipping with the Lord.

“For he satisfieth the longing soul, And filleth the hungry soul with goodness.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭107‬:‭9‬ ‭KJV‬‬
He doesn’t just leave us out there floundering, He promises to fill us. He isn’t going to “blow us off” or do something stupid or outlandish. “Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭KJV‬‬ These verses promising this to us, follow Jesus’ instruction to ask, seek, and knock. “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: for every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭7‬-‭8‬ ‭KJV‬‬
He is a good Father, in fact He is THE Good Father. Some didn’t have a good father, and it is hard to hear that, “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭11‬ ‭KJV‬‬ Jesus even acknowledged that fathers can be evil, but how much more will our Heavenly Father give good things to those who ask.

“Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.”
‭‭John‬ ‭6‬:‭26‬-‭27‬ ‭KJV‬‬
We aren’t just seeking physical filling, but we want so much more from God. His promises are so much greater than just provision of food. He promises a spiritual filling. ““And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭24‬:‭49‬ ‭NLT‬‬
