What Does It Mean To Be Happy?

What does happiness mean to you?

What does it mean to be happy?

I have been reading and studying on the subject of happiness. It is a fascinating subject. There are a lot of opinions, but I have found some answers. But let’s ask questions first.

What would it take for you to be happy?

What does your life have to look like for you to be happy?

What are you happy about right now?

What are your standards for happiness?

What expectations do you have for happiness?

I’m basically asking the same questions in different ways to trigger your mind to really think about it.

Does everything in your life have to be perfect and flawless before you can be happy?

Do people have to meet your expectations and standards before you can be happy?

Do you feel like you have to earn happiness?

Do you have more reasons why you aren’t or shouldn’t be happy than you have reasons why you should be happy?

I recently read of a woman who thought that everything had to be perfect, relationships, job, children, life in general, had to be perfect before she could be happy. Nothing could be out of place or wrong. THEN and only then could she be happy. She knew that would never happen, and knew that she would never be happy.

That is sad to me. It breaks my heart. It doesn’t have to be that way. Who decided it SHOULD be that way? She did. Therefore, she has the power to change her definition of happy. Just like you do. My definition of happy used to be that everything was going my way. I decided I didn’t like that definition and wanted to change it. I decided that happiness meant peace. I decided that even if life was chaos and everything was going crazy, I have peace knowing that Jesus is in control of everything. I can be happy even if life’s circumstances are bananas and seemingly out my control because I know who has my back.

I talked to someone recently who said their definition is grace and mercy.

What if you felt happy anytime you made someone else feel happy?

What if you felt happy anytime you wanted?

What if you decided today that happiness was grinning at yourself in the mirror for 2 minutes every morning because you know that you have nothing to fear?

What if you decided you weren’t going to let any outside force control your happiness?

You have the power of choice on your side, use it.
